How do you reply to a message you would rather not answer?
Immediately, and bluntly. It is dealt with.
In about four days. You are not going to be rushed.
With three messages, one of which is about something else.
Carefully, after drafting it twice, worrying about the tone.
With a voice note. It is warm, and it is two minutes long.
Precisely, slightly too correctly, and on your own schedule.
What do people say about you once you have left the room?
"Completely impossible to stress out."
"How does one person know absolutely everybody?"
"They noticed I was having a bad week and nobody else did."
"Everything is more fun when they are there."
"They will already have sorted it out."
"Nobody dislikes them. Nobody at all."
At a party where you know exactly one person, you:
Know nine by the end, and have made two introductions.
Find whoever is on their own, and stay with them.
End up at the centre of something without having meant to.
Help in the kitchen. It is much easier than small talk.
Talk to everybody, pleasantly, and commit to nothing.
Have one conversation, for two hours, and then leave.
Somebody asks for your honest opinion:
You give the version that will not hurt them.
You give it warmly, at length, with encouragement attached.
You give it accurately. They only asked out of politeness.
You give both sides, and let them pick which one you meant.
You give it once, quietly, and you do not repeat it.
You give it instantly, entirely, and probably too loudly.
How you handle waiting for something important:
You tell people about it. All of them.
You go over the details again, looking for the error.
You ask four friends what they think, and then wait.
You go quiet, and you think about nothing else.
You book something else, so you are busy when it lands.
You work. It is what you do with everything.
A plan changes at the last minute. You:
Remake it properly, and feel unsettled about it all day.
Accommodate it, and are faintly annoyed for about an hour.
Note who changed it, and how often that has now happened.
Prefer it, honestly. The new plan is probably better.
Rearrange around it, and mention the cost exactly once.
Point out that the original plan was the wrong one anyway.
How you come across the first time somebody meets you:
Charming, and more or less impossible to dislike.
Quiet, watchful, and slightly hard to place.
Immediately friendly, and mildly too much.
Composed, dry, and older than you actually are.
Interesting, and not quite in the same conversation.
Gentle, and somewhere else at the same time.
What people misread as your mood:
Concentration, which everybody assumes is anger.
Restlessness, which everybody assumes is boredom with them.
Being busy, which everybody assumes is coldness.
Distance, which everybody assumes is superiority.
Absorption, which everybody assumes is agreement.
Having finished deciding, which everybody assumes is temper.
Your role in the group chat:
The one suggesting something enormous at short notice.
The one quietly doing the booking nobody thanked them for.
The one who replies to the thing everybody skipped past.
The one who sends the kind message directly instead.
The one who decided it, because it had been nine days.
The one who agrees to all of it and arrives whenever.
Somebody is late meeting you. You:
Use the time. There is always something that needs doing.
Are perfectly happy. You were thinking about something.
Have not really noticed, being somewhere in your own head.
Are annoyed by minute four and over it by minute twelve.
Order something. This is now a nice sit down.
Have talked to two strangers by the time they arrive.
How you make a big decision in front of other people:
By the principle, which you will explain whether asked or not.
By how it feels, which you will not be able to justify.
Instantly, out loud, and then you defend it.
Slowly, and once it is made nobody is unmaking it.
By talking it through with everybody within reach.
By who it affects, and how they are going to take it.
What you are like when you are genuinely upset:
You go quiet and drift, and it takes days to name it.
It is out within ninety seconds, and then it is over.
You say nothing at all, and become completely immovable.
You talk about it fluently and feel none of it yet.
You withdraw, wait to be asked, and are hurt when you aren't.
You are extremely fine, in a way that nobody believes.
