Pick up the trail
×
Pick a weekend with absolutely nothing planned:
Somewhere loud and faintly illicit, until it gets light out.
A drive, a diner, and the same three people as always.
Somewhere you were told not to go, with people you just met.
A long drive, a radio, and no particular destination.
How do you actually communicate?
At volume, with your whole body, and probably a phone call.
With a well-placed sarcastic comment.
Loudly, and with a great many exclamation points.
In references only about three people will actually get.
Pick a fashion instinct:
Something with a bit of scandal in it, cut to move.
Something that means something. It is a statement, obviously.
Bigger. Brighter. Visible from the other side of the road.
As much as possible, all at once, unapologetically.
What do you actually value most?
Everything in its place, and everybody behaving.
Slowness. Things taking exactly the time they take.
Honesty, including the uncomfortable kind.
Being able to adapt to more or less anything.
Your relationship with technology:
You would be first in the street to own the new thing.
The less of it, the better, honestly.
Obsessed with the newest, shiniest version of everything.
You have absorbed it. It is simply how you think now.
Your ideal party:
Somebody's front room, everybody dressed up, home by eleven.
Small, unplanned, and it goes on far too late.
A few people, good music, low expectations.
As big and as over the top as is physically possible.
What actually comforts you?
Knowing that the night is not over yet.
Everybody being where they said that they would be.
More of literally anything good.
Knowing you saw it coming before everybody else did.
Your biggest fear:
Turning into exactly the people you were warned about becoming.
Being hurried along by someone else's clock.
Being boring for even one second of it.
Missing something before it is already over.
How would a friend describe you?
The reason that it happened at all.
Impossible to stress out.
The one with the best deadpan comment.
A lot, in the best possible way.
Pick the music situation:
One song on repeat until somebody makes you stop.
A record that changed what you thought was allowed.
Something enormous, with a chorus audible two streets away.
A playlist so specific that it is basically a diary entry.
The thing you would find hardest about living then:
Nobody knowing where you were. Ever.
Being told what somebody like you does and does not do.
How slowly news arrived, and how much of it was wrong.
Waiting two weeks to find out whether the photographs came out.
The thing you would find easiest:
Making an entire evening out of one television programme.
Being unreachable for whole afternoons at a time.
Having the whole internet, and it still being slow and odd.
Living a good deal of it in public, on purpose.
