Pick up the trail
×
What instantly makes you feel loved?
Somebody telling you, specifically, what they appreciate about you.
Somebody dropping everything simply to be with you.
Somebody handling it before you even had to ask.
A hug that lasts a few seconds longer than expected.
Somebody turning up with the exact thing you mentioned once.
Pick a date night:
An entire day together with both phones left at home.
A long conversation where you both properly open up.
Something they booked months ago because it made them think of you.
Somebody who arranged every detail so you didn't have to think.
Something low-key and close: a sofa, a blanket, no agenda.
The fastest way to hurt your feelings:
Asking for help and getting excuses instead.
A careless comment, said without thinking.
Being physically distant when you obviously need comfort.
Being cancelled on again, for something more important.
Being forgotten on the day you would never forget for them.
How do you show somebody that you love them?
Quietly handle something so that they don't have to.
Tell them, often, and mean every word of it.
Stay close. Hold their hand. Turn up in person.
Notice what they want, and then remember it for months.
Clear your schedule and give them your whole attention.
Pick a gift you would actually want:
Something small, chosen on purpose, that proves they were paying attention.
A handwritten note that says exactly the right thing.
A weekend away, just the two of you.
Them fixing the thing you have complained about for months.
Nothing at all. Just come and sit next to me.
After a fight, what actually helps you reset?
A hug, before either of you says anything else.
Hearing them say out loud that they are sorry, and why.
Sitting down together and properly talking it through.
Watching them fix whatever caused it in the first place.
Them arriving later with something that means I was thinking about you.
The thing other people do that you find hardest:
Never saying the nice thing out loud, even when they mean it.
Being busy every single time you want to see them.
Offering to help, and then never actually doing it.
Treating the thought behind a present as beside the point.
Flinching away from affection in public.
Pick the compliment that means the most:
"You remembered. I only said it once."
"You put that into words better than I ever could."
"I would rather be here with you than anywhere else."
"I noticed you handled that so I didn't have to."
"Come here. I just want to be near you."
Your biggest fear in a relationship:
Becoming an afterthought, squeezed in between everything else.
Being with somebody who never says what they are actually feeling.
Being with somebody who says the right things and never follows through.
Being with somebody who never thinks of you when you are not there.
Ending up with somebody who is just... not affectionate.
Pick a free evening with somebody you love:
Curled up close, not even needing to talk.
Talking for hours about nothing and everything.
Doing literally anything, as long as it is together and undistracted.
Them taking one thing off your plate without being asked.
Them producing the thing you mentioned wanting months ago.
You are ill and miserable. The best thing they could do:
Deal with everything. You don't even have to know what everything is.
Get in, put a hand on your back, and stay there.
Tell you that you're doing fine and it isn't pathetic to feel awful.
Cancel their plans and sit in the room, doing not very much.
Come back from the shop with the specific thing you love.
Twenty years in, the thing you would want still to be true:
That you still choose each other's company over anybody else's.
That they still tell you out loud, and still mean it.
That neither of you has ever had to ask twice.
That you still reach for each other without thinking.
That they still notice what you love, and remember it.
