Pick up the trail
×
In a group project, you are the one who:
Rallies everybody and sets the direction in the first ten minutes.
Watches quietly, then makes the one comment that changes everything.
Finds the shortcut that nobody else had noticed was there.
Does the heavy lifting, without ever mentioning that you did it.
A party you didn't want to go to turns out to be good. You:
Are in the middle of it, and three people have already adopted you.
Find the one person worth talking to and stay there all evening.
End up hearing everybody's news, and remembering all of it.
Stay exactly one hour longer than planned, then quietly vanish.
Your ideal environment:
Wide open, faintly wild, with people you trust somewhere in it.
Anywhere that has something in it which needs figuring out.
Water, noise, other people, and nowhere in particular to be.
Somewhere with history in it, and everyone you love nearby.
How you make decisions:
Observe first, decide last, and be right about it.
Take your time. There is no rush, and there never has been.
Watch the entire field, wait, then move once and fast.
Decide instantly and privately, and tell nobody until it's done.
A friend is in trouble. You:
Show up immediately, no questions asked, questions later.
Stay calm and steady until the whole thing has resolved itself.
Get them out of the house and make them laugh exactly once.
Turn up quietly, sit with them, and don't make it a whole thing.
Pick the strength you'd actually claim:
Noticing the thing in the room that nobody has said out loud.
Getting out of situations other people are still stuck inside.
Patience, followed by extremely good timing.
Remembering everything, especially what once mattered to someone.
Pick a time of day:
Dawn. Time to move, and everyone else is still asleep.
Night. Everything gets quieter and considerably clearer.
Mid-afternoon, nothing scheduled, good company, no plan.
The hour before a storm, when the air changes.
Someone crosses a line with you. You:
Get out of range, and remove them from anything that matters.
Say it once, plainly, and let the size of you do the rest.
Never forget it. Not out of spite — you simply do not forget.
Withdraw entirely, and let them work out what happened.
At a family gathering, you are:
Organising everyone into something, whether they wanted it or not.
Cooking, carrying, and quietly checking that everybody has eaten.
Slightly apart from it, seeing exactly how the day is going.
Holding the entire thread of who said what to whom, since childhood.
Your phone is at four percent and you are an hour from home. You:
Had already planned for this. There is a cable in the bag.
Borrow somebody's charger within about ninety seconds.
Talk to a stranger, and somehow end up with a lift.
Let it die. You would honestly rather be unreachable.
The thing you would most want said to your face:
"You would have come and got me, wherever I was."
"You saw that coming months before the rest of us did."
"You always find a way out. Every single time."
"Everything felt manageable the whole time you were here."
Years from now, you want to be spoken of:
As the reason any of it was fun in the first place.
As the one who waited, and then got it exactly right.
As the one who held everyone together and remembered it all.
As someone entirely themselves, who never explained it.
