Pick up the trail
×
It's Saturday morning and nothing is planned. You are:
Inviting everyone over. The more the merrier, genuinely.
Already halfway out of the door on some spontaneous trip.
Doing something productive that will also look good later.
Still in bed. Possibly until noon. No regrets at all.
How you handle a disagreement:
Lay out why you are right, in order, with examples.
Go in immediately, at full volume, regardless of relative size.
Leave the room. You will be perfectly fine in twenty minutes.
Absorb it, stay calm, and make sure nobody actually gets hurt.
Your friends would describe you as:
The one who remembers absolutely everybody's birthday.
The one with impeccable taste, about more or less everything.
The one who cannot sit still unless there is a job on.
The one who is either sprinting or completely unconscious.
The time of year you are most yourself:
Winter. Cosy chaos, snow, everything slightly too extreme.
Spring. Easy, mild, nothing demanding anything of you.
Autumn. Crisp, loud underfoot, excellent for complaining.
Summer. Long days, everyone outdoors, nobody left behind.
Your energy level, honestly:
Steady and high, right up until you fall asleep mid-sentence.
Two good hours a day. You have made peace with which two.
Relentless. If there is nothing to do you will invent something.
Slow, enormous, and impossible to move once you have settled.
Pick a snack:
Whatever is most interesting on the menu.
Something a little bit fancy, obviously.
Something you will then guard aggressively from everybody.
Whatever is nearest to the sofa.
At the park, metaphorically speaking, you are:
Greeting every single person who comes in. Every one of them.
Gone. Somewhere over there. Not responding to your name.
Quietly organising everybody else into some kind of shape.
Very small, very loud, completely unbothered by the odds.
The thing people get wrong about you:
They think it is vanity. It is standards.
They think you are lazy. You are conserving.
They think you are aloof. You are sensitive and tired.
They think you are slow. You are just not in a hurry.
Somebody new joins the group. You:
Adopt them within approximately four minutes.
Acknowledge them from where you are. That is the welcome.
Assess them noisily, then decide they are yours forever.
Hang back, watch, and warm up to them by the end of the night.
You are handed a job nobody asked you to do. You:
Do the opposite, at speed, and make it look deliberate.
Do it properly, and ensure it is noticed that you did.
Do it, then three more, then ask if there is anything else.
Do it quietly, and carry somebody else's while you are there.
Pick a holiday:
A big group trip where everybody somehow gets along.
Backpacking somewhere remote with no itinerary at all.
A boutique city break with genuinely excellent restaurants.
Literally anywhere at all that has a hammock in it.
How you would want to be remembered:
As the one who never once left a job half done.
As the one who was never intimidated by anything, ever.
As the one who was far gentler than anybody expected.
As the one who turned up when it was actually bad.
