Pick up the trail
×
A new person joins the group. You:
Make it your personal business that they feel welcome.
Perform, immediately, until they laugh at least once.
Hang back until you have worked out what's expected of you.
Break something within the hour, entirely by accident.
Somebody has to take charge and nobody has. You:
Take it, then worry all night about having done it badly.
Take it calmly, and start by asking who needs what.
Volunteer cheerfully, having not fully understood the task.
Take it, and do it your own strange way regardless.
The thing you are quietly afraid of:
That the good mood in the room was only ever your job.
That you will turn out to be nothing like who you were meant to be.
Being replaced by somebody newer and shinier.
Being left somewhere, and nobody coming back for you.
Pick how you would spend a completely free evening:
Somewhere with an audience, however small.
Doing something loud you will have to explain tomorrow.
Checking in on the one person who has gone quiet lately.
Making something nobody asked you to make.
How you show somebody that you care:
Remember everything, and then turn up with it.
Attach yourself permanently, whether or not they agreed to it.
Worry about them out loud, in a way they find annoying.
Make them something. Feed them, if at all possible.
You get the credit for something you did not do alone. You:
Take the applause, then name everyone involved on the way down.
Feel faintly sick about it for most of a week.
Correct it immediately and quietly, as a simple matter of fact.
Don't notice until somebody points it out three days later.
Pick your role in any group you have ever been in:
The one everybody actually likes.
The one who makes it funny, usually at their own expense.
The one who counts heads and worries about the time.
The one who notices who hasn't eaten anything.
You have made a genuine mess of something. You:
Go away for a while and feel thoroughly bad about it.
Apologise enormously, fix nothing, get forgiven anyway.
Stay cheerful and start again, with no visible damage.
Go back and rebuild it properly, alone, at night.
Someone says this and you go quiet for a second. Which one:
"Everybody is nicer when you are in the room."
"You are a menace, and I would be lost without you."
"You looked after me and never made it a favour."
"You are impossible to discourage, and it's catching."
How you handle being told to be more sensible:
Agree warmly, and change absolutely nothing.
Take it seriously. Possibly rather too seriously.
Point out that somebody around here has to be.
Ignore it. The work is the argument.
Pick the day you would want back:
One where everybody you like was in the same place.
One where you were, briefly, absolutely on form.
One from before everything changed.
One that got completely and memorably out of hand.
Twenty years on, what you would want to be remembered for:
Getting everybody home. Every single time.
Being kind in a way that was actually useful.
Never once letting a single person give up.
Making something nobody expected from someone like you.
